Selena Gomez might be hanging up the microphone for good. The 28-year-old singer was featured on the April 2021 cover of Vogue this past Tuesday. During the cover story interview, Selena Gomez on Politics, Faith, and Making the Music of her Career, she hinted at her potential retirement to journalist Jia Tolentino.
Gomez’s consideration for retirement stems from her struggles with music. She wants to spend more of her time focusing on her acting career rather than focusing on her musical career. She feels that her work has not “transcended her persona,” according to Vogue.
“It’s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously. I’ve had moments where I’ve been like, ‘What’s the point? Why do I keep doing this?’ Gomez told Vogue. ‘Lose You to Love Me’ I felt was the best song I’ve ever released, and for some people, it still wasn’t enough.”
Gomez’s single ‘Lose You to Love me” currently has over 338 million views on its official YouTube video. It peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a full week and stayed charted for a total of 16 weeks. The single was her first and only single to reach a No. 1 status. Gomez says she wrote the single in 2019 on Valentine’s Day.
Gomez has achieved a lot during her music career; amassing 18 Teen Choice Awards is one of her most significant achievements. She has released three studio albums, one compilation album, four EP’s, 32 singles, and three promotional singles throughout her career. However, besides all of her success, Gomez feels that she is not treated and should be by critics and other music industry members. The singer paints her fans as the main reason she has come this far and has continued to pursue a career in music.
“I think there are a lot of people who enjoy my music, and for that, I’m so thankful, for that I keep going, but I think the next time I do an album, it’ll be different,” Gomez said. “I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire music.”
The star made a name for herself during her role as Alex on the Disney television series ‘Wizards of Waverly Place.” The series aired on Disney Channel from 2007 to 2012, receiving two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Teen Choice Awards, and 6 other awards. Following her contribution to the show, Gomez joined the group ‘Selena Gomez & the Scene.’ Together, the band released three studio albums, one remix album, seven singles, and seven music videos.
Gomez is currently working on the new drama series ‘Rising’ for the streaming platform Freeform. She is teaming up with Aaron Kapan, Mandy Teefey, and Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment as an executive producer for the series. The show follows an 18-year-old girl set in a low-income Latino neighborhood.
After the Vogue interview, Gomez seems very adamant about continuing her career in acting. As for music, she wants to put more of her focus into producing rather than performing. Regarding certainty, time will time us all.
