On the evening before his 100th day in office as the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden addressed congressed and spoke about several important topics that the country and it’s citizens are currently facing.
He started his speech by recognizing the first female Vice President, Kamala Harris, spending a short moment to shine the light on her before proceeding with his address. Biden said that it was important to talk about crisis and opportunity so that the country could focus on rebuilding from the coronavirus pandemic.
He expressed his beliefs that ‘American was on the move again’ and proudly mentioned several of the accomplishments that his administration had earned in just the first 100 days. He spent an odd amount of time focusing on the capitol riots that took place on January 6th. He seemingly continued to bring this up throughout his address, but spent a significant amount of time talking about it early on during his address.
Biden went on to shift his focus towards the ‘American Rescue Plan’ and reminded everyone that his administration successfully passed the legislation that included $1,400 in additional stimulus checks and enhanced unemployment benefits through September. Biden says he believes that the positive results and benefits are already being seen within the stock market and jobs numbers, but believes that there is still work to be done.
He praised his own administration’s ability to rapidly deploy vaccine shots into people’s arms. Seemingly doubling his own expectations, he praised his administration for vaccinating 220 million people in the first 100 days of his presidency.
He raised his voice and told everyone to “go get the vaccination America, they are available”, before pausing his address for a few moments. He reiterated that “everyone over the age of sixteen is eligible right now”. Biden’s ability to convince citizens to get their vaccinations is important, but there are millions of Americans that will likely never have enough trust in the vaccine to actually go out and take it. Biden will likely face these challenges in the coming weeks and months.
Over the course of the 75-minutes speech, Biden spoke about a wide range of issues and expressed several important plans that he is focusing on, including the infrastructure bill. He also said that he’s told other world leaders that it’s “never, ever, ever, a good idea to bet against the United States of America and it still isn’t”.
In the final moments of his speech, he called for everyone to “get together” and provided some hope to Americans that may not have voted for him in the 2020 election. Even though Biden managed to deliver a decent speech to congress, he’s got a long way to go before he can truly unite the country’s citizens.
