Britney Spears has been under a legal conservatorship for more than 12 years now. In this time frame, she has never been able to address a judge about ending this conservatorship, until now.
Britney will be able to address the court about ending her conservatorship in a status hearing on June 23rd. This will be the first time Britney has ever been able to express her feelings on her conservatorship in a court appearance. As a matter of fact, Britney Spears has never really talked publicly about her conservatorship to begin with. While we have a feeling she is in support of the “#freebritney” movement from liking posts, she has never spoken out about it herself.
Her father, Jamie Spears, has been in full control of her conservatorship for the majority of the time she has been under it, but as of recently his status has changed to co-owner. Regardless, he still has control over Britneys finances; and many think he may even have more control over her than that.
Fans of Britney have been questioning her behavior on social media and in public for years. People believe that she acts out of character, as if someone is controlling her every move. Many believe that that person is Jamie Spears himself.
So, Britney getting to speak out at court about her conservatorship is a big move for her. It is understood that she will attempt to explain to the court that she is no longer in need of a conservatorship, especially one that her father is in control of.
According to NBC News, Britneys attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, asked for this hearing for her. He had this to say about the hearing and why he was requesting it; “The conservatee, she has requested that I seek from the court a status hearing at which she can address the court directly,”.
Although Ingham III requested this court appearance to happen in the next 30 days, he was not granted this request. However, June 23rd is still a short way away and the closest Britney has ever been to speaking out about her conservatorship, so the set date is a win in itself.
Britney Spears has been unfairly portrayed in the public eye by the paparazzi a majority of her career. She received more scrutiny than any other celebrity, and it was all undeserved. When she no longer wanted to be treated the way she was being treated and started reacting to all of the unfair harassment, her father requested a conservatorship over her. He believed she was unfit to have control over her life at the time. Typical conservatorships last 1 year; nearly 12 years later Britney is still under this control.
While this conservatorship has been fought against for a while now, it hasn’t been easy doing so. Finally, it feels Britney is getting closer to getting her freedom back. She deserves to have control over her life because her father does not seem to know what’s best for her. On June 23rd she will finally have the chance to fight for that right using her own words.
