The Gonzaga Bulldogs are seeking to make college basketball history this season. Only 7 teams in NCAA history have ever finished a season without a loss. The last team to do so was the Bobby Knight led Indiana Hoosiers back in 1976 (NCAA.com). Here are three reasons that Gonzaga will finish the season undefeated and bring the national title back home to Spokane Washington!
- Gonzaga’s Depth is Better than Any Other Team
WCC Player of the Year Corey Kispert may get most of the hype (and deservedly so), but do not forget the three other Bulldog superstars. Drew Timme, Jalen Suggs, and Joel Ayayi all average double figures in points scored per game. Simply put, the Zags are not just a one man band, they are a four man wrecking crew!
Gonzaga’s depth is by far the best in the country and any of their four stars can take over a basketball game at any given time. Although the 6-7 Kispert is a finalist for the Naismith Award, it is interesting that he doesn’t even lead his own team in points or rebounds. Those honors belong to Drew Timme, who scores 19 a game and brings home 7.2 rebounds per contest (ESPN). The Zags’ depth will be a key factor in winning the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
- Mark Few is one Heck of a Coach
58-year old Mark Few is possibly the most underrated basketball coach in the country. It is amazing to think that Few has been at Gonzaga since 1989 and took over as head coach in 1999! That kind of long tenure is rarely seen in collegiate athletics these days.
Few is not mentioned in the same breath as Knight, Calipari, and Coach K but he definitely should be. Few has won nearly 84% of his ball games since taking over as head coach 22 years ago! Few has also been named WCC Coach of the Year a record 13 times! If Gonzaga completes the perfecto, Few should get a great deal of the credit for building this program up over the years.
- Offense, Offense, Offense!
This Gonzaga team possesses the best offense in all of college basketball and is quite possibly one of the best offenses in college hoops history. This Bulldogs team has averaged nearly 92 points per game this season and that stat is super impressive to say the least. Coach Few has installed an NBA-like style of offense that relies on high ball screens and a lightning fast tempo.
This type of offense is not only fun for fans to watch, it runs most opponents’ defenses out of the gym as well. The Zags’ constantly fast-paced approach tires other teams out and usually has defenders gasping for air.
With Gonzaga’s depth, Coach Few’s expertise, and a highly efficient offense, no one would be surprised if the Bulldogs bring home the national title.
If you are a college basketball fan, you must watch Monday night’s NCAA Championship. You might just get a chance to witness this Gonzaga squad make college hoops history.
