3 Reasons the Texans will NOT trade Deshaun Watson

Image

All NFL fans know by now that Deshaun Watson is not happy with the Houston Texans.  In fact, Watson has reportedly asked for a trade multiple times in the last few weeks.  Apparently, the star quarterback is angry because he was not involved in the head coaching search after Bill O’Brien was fired last October.

Lots of NFL teams have tried to contact the Texans about acquiring Watson. However, the Texans front office has simply let all calls regarding Watson go straight to voicemail (msn.com).  Here are three reasons why the Houston Texans will NOT trade Deshaun Watson.

1. Deshaun Watson is the Face of the Franchise

After leading the Clemson Tigers to a college football championship trophy, Watson was drafted by the Texans in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.  Ever since then Watson has been the face of the Houston Texans franchise and he has given all Texans fans a reason to believe in their team again.  In fact, the 6-2 215 pound playmaker led the Texans to back-to-back AFC South division titles in 2018 and 2019.

The Texans will not trade Watson because that would result in an angry fan base.  Season tickets sales would drop and so would overall game attendance without Watson under center.  Like all NFL teams, the Texans need a massive turnout in attendance for the 2021 season to recoup some of the losses from the pandemic.

2. Watson is One of the Top 5 QB’s in the NFL

The Houston Texans may have made some questionable decisions over the last few seasons but their front office is not stupid.  The Texans brass knows that Watson is one of the most talented players in the NFL.  In fact, Watson has been selected to three straight Pro Bowls from 2018-2020.

Although the Texans stumbled to a 4-12 record during the weird 2020 season, Watson had one of the most productive seasons in NFL history.  Watson led the league in passing yards by throwing for 4,823 yards.  Watson also tossed 33 touchdowns (pro-football-reference.com).  With those types of numbers, trading Watson makes zero sense for the Texans franchise.

3. Watson Recently Signed a Huge Contract Extension

The final, and probably most important, reason why the Texans will not trade Watson is because he just signed a mega contract extension worth nearly 178 million dollars!  The new deal keeps Watson in a Texans uniform through the 2025 season.  Why in the world would the Texans get rid of Watson just a few months after making this huge financial commitment to him

It was definitely bizarre to see Watson demand a trade just a few short months after signing this massive extension.  Heck, we all remember how emotional Watson got during the press conference back in September that announced his new contract!  Watson seemed touched that the Texans franchise had that much faith in him.  Now it is time for Watson to have some faith in the Texans organization and honor the contract that he signed.
