Justin Timberlake Is Facing Backlash After Super Bowl Prince Tribute

Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl halftime show has Prince fans talking – and not in a good way.

After performing a medley of his hits, Timberlake, 37, slowed things down by sitting at a piano and singing Prince’s “I Will Die 4 U” alongside a hologram projection of the late artist. While many Timberlake fans found the performance hauntingly beautiful, Prince fans objected on the grounds that the legend specifically said he never wanted to be a hologram.

“That’s the most demonic thing imaginable,” Prince said in a 1998 interview. “Everything is as it is, and it should be… That whole virtual reality thing … it really is demonic. And I am not a demon.”

Timberlake says he received the blessing to use the hologram from musician Questlove, who is considered “a gatekeeper on Prince.”
