Academy Pledges to Double Minority Membership by 2020

On Friday, Jan. 22, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors released a statement vowing to double the membership of minorities and females by 2020.

The Academy’s board voted unanimously to approve “substantive changes designed to make the Academy’s membership, its governing bodies, and its voting members significantly more diverse,” according to the release.

“The Academy is going to lead and not wait for the industry to catch up,” said president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
